    One of the pivotal moments in the history of the Walt Disney Studio was the Animation strike from May 29, 1941 until July 29, 1941. The majority of issues dealt with struggles for control and issues of intellectual property because Disney was selling his own name and took credit for the work. The studio reopened for everyone to return to work on September 21, 1941, but the studio would not be the way it had been. At first, the studio was a familial atmosphere, but afterward, the work atmosphere became formal, cold, and corporate. According to Johnson, there became a clear divide between those who went on strike and those who crossed the picket line. After the strike was settled, there was uneasiness throughout the studio because the vibes were all wrong.

    In 1949, Arthur Freed was a songwriter for MGM. Betty Comden and Adolph Green wrote the script for Singin’ in the Rain, charged with the task of making an original musical based on the songs of Freed and turning these pieces into a coherent picture. They needed to include 15 or 20 of Freed’s songs. As Jane Feuer has noted, all musicals are self-referential in some sense, meaning they draw attention to themselves. By drafting a script around previously written songs, Singin’ in the Rain would have to do just that. By August 10, 1950, the entire script had been written, edited, and polished, and it was now ready to be transformed into moving images.

    The company was ready to begin rehearsing on April 2, 1951. Debbie Reynolds, who played the role of Kathy Selden, was not on the same level of dancing skill as Gene Kelly. She was trained as a gymnast, but not a dancer. She struggled to keep up with Kelly, often working extremely hard to play her role. He was very demanding of her, as well as the entire cast and crew, and at the beginning of rehearsals, there was a large talent gap between the two actors. Sometimes, Reynolds would stay overnight to work on the dance numbers. There was even a time when she hid under a piano and sobbed to herself, only to be consoled by Fred Astaire. The rehearsals continued at a fast pace, often being very strenuous and tiring for the actors and dancers. Rehearsals were finished by June 17, 1951.

    The first job as an artist garnered by Walt Disney was as an apprentice to two commercial artists (Pesmen-Rubin) who were friends of Roy. Disney went into business with Ubbe Iwwerks (who would later change his name to Ub Iwerks), calling their partnership Iwwerks-Disney. That didn’t last very long, and Disney joined The Kansas City Slide Co. early that February drawing film ads.

    With his newfound money, Disney rented out a garage and began his animation career. His first reel of animation was exhibited at the Newman Theater in Kansas City on March 20, 1921. He called the series Laugh-O-grams. When Disney showed his work to Milton Feld, the man who ran the theater, Feld asked Disney about the cost of the reel. Immediately, out of fear, inexperience, and exuberance, he stated his out-of-pocket cost. It was only later that Disney realized he was going to be making them for no profit. Not long after, he legally incorporated his company, and as president of Laugh-O-Gram Films, Inc., Walt Disney was now in charge of his very first animation studio. After a few failed forays into skewed fairy tales and with money running thin, Disney filmed Alice’s Wonderland, which was a mix of animation and live-action. Eventually, the Laugh-O-Grams failed and Walt declared bankruptcy. He made photographic portraits of babies to scrounge together some money, then headed west with a first class ticket to Los Angeles, California.

It then focused on producing horror films in the 1930s. After 1936, the Laemmle’s no longer controlled Universal giving the company over to Charles R. Rogers.

    Cuban Pre-revolutionary Cinema
    On January 24, 1897, a cinèmatographe arrived in Cuba and launched Cuban cinema. Leading up to the start of the Revolution in 1953, about 80 full-length Cuban films were made. Most of these 80 films were melodramas or historic reviews. Some of the influential early Cuban directors include José E. Casasús, Enrique Díaz Quesada, Ramón Peón and Ernesto Caparrós.

    Fleming was married to Clara West Strouse on April 7, 1909. He was 20 at the time, and Strouse was only 16. They did not have any children together. This marriage was brief and ended in 1915. His second marriage was to Lucile Rosson whom Fleming married on September 26, 1933. They had two daughters together. Victoria Sue Fleming was born on January 28, 1935, while Sally Fleming was born in 1937.

    He also owned a property in Bel Air, California called Moraga Estate. Fleming began developing the property in 1937 and completed it in 1940 after finishing both Gone with the Wind and The Wizard of Oz. This horse ranch was a location that many stars used to frequent. Some of these stars included Clark Gable, which Fleming directed in Red Dust and Gone with the Wind, Vivian Leigh, who he also directed in Gone with the Wind, and Spencer Tracy, who he directed in Captains Courageous.

    By the late 1920s, Laemmle realized that something had to change so he hired new domestic and international directors who would give Universal Pictures its distinct, brooding style. Some of the European directors that Laemmle hired were Paul Leni and Paul Fejos. Leni had directed Waxworks (1924), a German Expressionist film, The Cat and the Canary (1927), which was a Gothic thriller, and a big budget epic with horror undertones The Man Who Laughs (1928). Fejos was a Hungarian director that Universal also hired who directed an experimental independent feature The Last Moment (1927), Lonesome (1928), and Broadway (1929).

    Throughout this gradual transition into sound, Laemmle Jr. was also trying to implement his different ideas of what the studio should produce. For him, “fewer was better.” He wanted to give Universal the prestige of some of the larger production companies. He was successful and started to produce better movies, however these movies were also more expensive, demanding much larger budgets. In order to ensure these more quality films, Laemmle Jr. would pay outside stars and directors more than contract talent. He considered this to be the only strategy available to him since Universal was a smaller studio with few renowned directors and stars. During Laemmle Jr.’s time as the founder and president of Universal Pictures Corporation he produced Show Boat (1929), Broadway, and King of Jazz (1930). King of Jazz was a major step for Universal because it was its first all-color musical feature. He also focused on generating prestige for Universal with the serious anti-war drama All Quiet on the Western Front (1930). Laemmle Jr. was also the president of the company who started the trend for producing films in the horror genre. This relationship began with //The Hunchback of Notre Dame// (1923) and The Phantom of the Opera (1925). It later intensified in the sound era with films like Dracula (1931) and Frankenstein (1931).

    Although Universal Pictures had an extensive distribution system and was the largest of the Little Three, it had significant financial troubles. It also was struggling because it had few major stars and it would lose successful filmmakers to larger studios. Because Universal had few major stars it would promote new stars by putting them visually striking horror films. This strategy made actors Bela Lugosi, Boris Karloff, and Claude Rains famous. After 1935, Universal targeted small town audiences, building up another new star, Deanna Durbin. It also produced B series that were important to the studio like Sherlock Holmes films in the 1940s and slapstick Abbott and Costello series.
