49th Parallel

49th Parallel is a 1941 war drama directed by British director Michael Powell. The film stars Eric Portman, Laurence Olivier, Raymond Lovell, Anton Walbrook, and Leslie Howard. The film is set in early WWII and focuses on a crew of Nazi officers and crewmen stranded in Canada after their U-boat sinks. [1]

Powell was approached by the British Ministry of Information to make a propaganda film, with the suggestion of making it about mine-sweeping. Powell went a different direction with the film, hoping to make a film that would sway the still neutral United States. The film won the Academy award for Best Story and was nominated for Best Picture and Best Screenplay.[2]
